There’s something about autumn in Leavenworth that makes us slow down a little.

Maybe it’s the crisp mountain air, the Bavarian buildings framed in gold and red, or the western larches—those tall evergreens that turn a brilliant golden yellow before dropping their needles for winter.

Whatever brings you here, Leavenworth in autumn is something special.

And while Front Street is beautiful in the fall, we encourage you to get out and explore. Some of the best autumn scenery is just beyond our little Bavarian village.

Leavenworth LarchesWhen to See the Leavenworth Larches

If Leavenworth larches are on your must-see list, plan for late September through October, with peak color often arriving in the first half of October. Timing varies with elevation and weather, so don’t worry too much about finding that one “perfect” weekend. There is usually plenty of autumn color to enjoy.

Take the Scenic Route

You don’t have to go far to find beautiful scenery.

Icicle Road follows Icicle Creek into the mountains and offers plenty of opportunities for a hike, picnic or scenic stop.

Tumwater Canyon, just west of Leavenworth along Highway 2, winds alongside the Wenatchee River with dramatic mountain views and beautiful fall color.

For another lovely outing, head toward Lake Wenatchee, where colorful trees, mountain views and water come together for a classic autumn drive. And if you’re arriving from the west, don’t rush over Stevens Pass—the drive into Leavenworth is part of the adventure.

Travel tip: Fall weekends can be busy, especially during peak larch season and Oktoberfest. Start your day early, allow extra time and consider a weekday visit if your schedule allows.

Hike Into the Color

You don’t have to be a serious hiker to enjoy Leavenworth autumn activities.

For an easier outing, Icicle Gorge follows Icicle Creek through the forest and offers beautiful scenery without taking your entire day.

Icicle Ridge starts close to town and rewards hikers with beautiful valley views.

For more experienced hikers, Colchuck Lake, Stuart Lake and Eight Mile Lake offer that iconic combination of golden larches and dramatic alpine scenery. These are more demanding trails, so check conditions, permits and weather before heading out.

Prefer something closer to town? A stroll along the Wenatchee River and through Waterfront Park is an easy way to enjoy the fall colors without hiking boots.

Head Into Town!

After all that fresh mountain air, come back downtown and enjoy the other side of autumn in Leavenworth.

Wander Front Street, browse the shops, grab a Bavarian lunch or a local drink and soak up the atmosphere.

And don’t miss the Bavarian Walking Tour. It’s a fun way to learn how Leavenworth became the Bavarian village you see today—and you’ll notice details you might otherwise walk right past.

Fall also brings the Autumn Leaf Festival and Oktoberfest, so if you’re visiting during one of the big weekends, plan ahead for lodging and parking.

A Few Tips From Your Friends at Obertal

Layer up. Mornings can be chilly, even when afternoons are sunny.

Wear good shoes. Even if you’re not hiking, you’ll want to explore.

Start early. Popular trails and parking areas fill quickly during peak color.

Check conditions. Mountain weather can change quickly, especially at higher elevations.

And most importantly, leave room for spontaneity. Sometimes the best memories come from the scenic pull-off you didn’t plan, the trail you hadn’t heard of or the little Bavarian café where you decided to linger a while longer.

When you’re ready to call it a day, come back to Obertal. We’re just a block off Front Street, so you can park the car, put your feet up and enjoy being right in the middle of all that autumn magic.

Come for the Leavenworth larches.

Stay for the Leavenworth colors.

And leave with a whole lot more memories than you planned on making.

We’ll save you a little strudel for the road. 😊
