A Family Affair: Leavenworth’s Christkindlmarkt
A family fair to remember. For Leavenworth, culture is rich on our streets. We pride ourselves on being a Bavarian-style town where you can find the best German food, beer, and festivals. So, if you’re up for a cultural adventure, this is an exciting small town to visit. Looking for something to do with the family during the Thanksgiving holidays? Our traditional Christkindlmarkt is held every year in Front Street Park and extended to the Leavenworth Festhalle. Leavenworth’s Christkindlmarkt will bring the family together with activities and events. The kids will soon be asking to come back every year.

At a Glance
Leavenworth’s Christkindlmarkt is packed with authentic German food, beer, and family-friendly activity. This is the perfect family vacation that will also allow you to do some Christmas shopping for the whole family. The handmade arts and craft are abundant in the Festhalle.

Lantern Workshop
This workshop is a favorite with the little ones. Taking place on Friday and Saturday during Thanksgiving weekend, kids get to pick a lantern to purchase and decorate themselves. The workshop is loaded with stickers, paint, glue, glitter and lots of fun things for the children to dig into. Once your kids have made their lantern, they are invited to walk in the Lantern Parade – see next

Lantern Parade
This event happens both Friday and Saturday as well. Starting at 5 pm from the Leavenworth Festhalle. Carrying their lanterns, children and parents follow Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus through the streets. The parade will end at the town’s gazebo where Christkind will meet everyone with a welcoming greeting.

Welcoming Ceremony
Lastly, the welcoming ceremony. As is the tradition in German-speaking countries, a young girl is chosen to be the “Christkind” or the “Golden Angel”. This is the symbol for Christmas. She joins Mr. and Mrs. Claus, as well as city dignitaries, and then people get to enjoy themselves with music and dancing.

If you’ve never experienced this beautiful festival, it’s not too late to join. The market is a warm and vibrant place to enjoy family and bring in well wishes for the upcoming holidays and new year. If you’re away from Germany this holiday season, you’ll feel right at home in Leavenworth, where the cheer and authentic food come in abundance. Join us for an event you won’t forget. Our rooms are comfortable, relaxing and in the middle all of the fun.
